Mind Boggling
Struggling to solve Sabrina's assignment, Red realizes his anxiety stems from a desire to impress his peers. He decides to focus on befriending them first. He approaches Rei openly, dropping his mental shields to prove his sincerity. Rei politely but bluntly tells him she disrespects him; to her, his use of a partition makes him feel "fake" and inherently untrustworthy, as if he is wearing a mask. Stung but appreciative of her honesty, Red moves on to Jason Grey, the medium who specializes in Ghost pokemon.
Jason explains that Red's analytical mindset actually causes psychic dissonance for him. He shares his spiritual perspective, arguing that understanding Ghost pokemon requires a fundamental humility and a release of the need to rationally understand everything, treating them as spirits rather than biological anomalies. To demonstrate, Jason summons a gastly, intentionally triggering the terrifying disorientation of "surrealism" in Red. They debate epistemology and the philosophical implications of Ghosts. Red struggles to fully adopt Jason's non-rational perspective but uses the conversation to practice examining the limits of his own knowledge, slowly constructing a new, "mind-boggling" mental lens that embraces profound uncertainty without completely abandoning the scientific method.
