Blue trains at night in Saffron City with Glen, reflecting on the chaotic aftermath of the Silph Co. attack. Red's public revelation of his ability to project sakki to control renegade pokemon has polarized the region. While some view Red as a hero for his role in stopping the terrorists, others are terrified of a psychic who can override pokemon conditioning, prompting Red to undergo specialized police training to combat Team Rocket and prove his allegiance. Though Blue is eager to continue his journey to Cinnabar Island to earn his next badge before his thirteenth birthday, he chooses to remain in Saffron to support his best friend through the intense public scrutiny. Blue is also waiting for a chance to challenge Sabrina for his sixth badge, hoping to be the first to face her newly acquired Miracle Eye technique. When Elaine, Lizzy, and members of Duncan's dojo arrive, Blue organizes a sparring session against their psychic pokemon, aiming to build a strong network of allies in an increasingly uncertain world where the public might turn against them.

Finally granted his gym challenge, Blue enters the packed Saffron Gym stadium, welcomed by cheering crowds and Sabrina's public praise for his role in discovering Miracle Eye. However, Sabrina completely upends his carefully prepared counter-strategies by declaring a six-on-one Mastery Challenge: Blue's entire team against just her alakazam. Stunned by the unprecedented format and lacking his usual "Battle Calm," Blue struggles to understand her motives. Realizing that wondering if the match is a setup or even winnable is useless, he forces himself to "play to his outs"—assuming victory is possible and working backward to find the narrow tactical path to achieve it. Deducing that the alakazam's extreme speed, psychic defenses, and passive cellular regeneration make a battle of attrition impossible, Blue resolves to overwhelm it with rapid, disruptive strikes before it can set up kinetic barriers.

The battle opens furiously. Blue's magneton attempts a Thunder Wave, but Sabrina blocks it with Safeguard. Blue quickly swaps to his newly evolved blastoise, who manages to bite the alakazam's arm and land a point-blank water blast before falling to a devastating psychic counterattack. Seeing the alakazam rapidly healing its dislocated arm, Blue sends out his luxray, but Sabrina uses telekinesis to flawlessly deflect its attacks. Anticipating Sabrina's rhythm, Blue briefly summons his magneton to unleash a blinding Flash, then immediately deploys his secret weapon: a shiny Dark-type umbreon.

With Sabrina blinded and unable to sense the Dark pokemon, the umbreon brutally bowls over and bites the confused alakazam. However, despite being blind and disoriented, Sabrina and her pokemon are so perfectly synchronized that the alakazam miraculously blasts the umbreon aside with a Focus Blast. Running low on viable options, Blue sends out his pidgeot to bait a kinetic deflection, instantly recalling the bird mid-flight to drop his massive snorlax directly onto the weakened alakazam. As the alakazam collapses under the weight, Blue swaps his magneton back in and paralyzes the psychic pokemon just as its Safeguard expires. Sabrina concedes the match, awarding Blue the Saffron badge and inviting him to a private meeting in her office, leaving him to wonder if she had intentionally let him win.
