Blue attends a Fuchsia Gym class on Poison-type tactics, learning how their attacks excel at zone control and psychological warfare. Later, Janine confronts him over his rumored ambitions for the Gym. Blue leans into the deception, arrogantly threatening to take her Leadership if she doesn't adapt, which successfully goads her into a three-on-three battle. Assuming she will use a standard Poison team, Blue is completely outmaneuvered when Janine opens with a slowbro that breathes fire, followed by a blaziken that shatters his defensive strategy. Blue concedes without fainting a single pokemon. However, he gracefully turns the humiliating loss into a learning experience, securing the first step in his manipulation for Koga.

In Saffron, Leaf leads a compassion-training class for Sabrina's students, teaching them to generate deep emotional care for their pokemon to help withstand Ghost encounters. After the session, Satori mentions she is nearly ready to evolve her torracat, while Rowan leaves in tears after experimenting with his personality partitions.

Leaf travels to Lavender Town and finally meets Laura's secretive informant: Dr. Fuji. He reveals that Silph is forcing him to develop the "Master Ball," an ultimate capture device designed for legendaries that completely overwrites a pokemon's identity, lobotomizing it into a biological machine. Fuji tests Leaf's moral consistency, asking if she would grant human rights to an incredibly powerful, intelligent pokemon even if it could cause great harm. When Leaf vehemently argues against mind-wiping any intelligent being, Fuji is relieved. Admitting his fear that the Master Ball will be abused, he reveals he is writing a fictional novel from the perspective of a highly intelligent pokemon to build public empathy before such a creature is discovered. He asks Leaf to co-write it with him. She excitedly agrees, suggesting the protagonist should be a Psychic type.
