Red's mother calls, warning him that Kazue Silph may have intentionally sought him out for political reasons, hinting at deeper machinations she refuses to explain over the phone. Blue calls Red to update him on the disaster in the tunnels, and Red informs him about the cloning tech; Blue immediately considers the massive market implications and plots to short-sell stocks. Later, Leaf confronts Red about his use of sakki (killing intent) in battles. She argues that suppressing his pokemon's conditioning to weaponize their lethal instincts is recklessly dangerous and warps his perspective. Red defends the practice as a creative, strategic puzzle and vital survival training.

The argument highlights their growing philosophical divide. To bridge the gap, Red suggests a psychic merge so he can directly experience her values. That evening, Leaf projects her profound, boundless empathy for all pokemon, which Red finds beautiful. But when Red attempts to project his own mental state, the connection is overwhelmingly colored by the raw, unprocessed grief of losing his father. Through that lens, Leaf is horrified to feel the clinical, alien way Red views pokemon as dangerous biological machines. She accuses his trauma of warping his worldview and flees the room. Crushed by the realization that he hurt her, Red decides he cannot leave to study with Sabrina; he must stay with his friends to prove he can change. Suddenly, an emergency broadcast airs on the ship: the legendary Stormbringer Zapdos has been spotted heading directly toward Vermilion City—right where Blue and Aiko are. Red and Leaf immediately abandon the cruise, packing their bags to rush back into the storm.
