Blue and Glen visit Duncan's dojo in Saffron City, finding former Gym Leader Koichi teaching there for free to atone for his past abuses of power. Blue aggressively questions Duncan for harboring him, arguing that giving Koichi a platform is dangerous regardless of his intentions. Duncan calmly explains his "split-and-commit" approach: he treats both the possibility of Koichi's sincerity and the possibility of his manipulation as simultaneously true, giving him a chance to do good while imposing strict, easily revocable conditions to ensure safety. Duncan challenges Blue to stick around and learn the value of humility; Blue agrees to a formal battle challenge, with the stakes being that if Blue loses, he must stay and train at the dojo for three months under Koichi's instruction. Walking away, Blue pushes back against Glen's survivor's guilt, asserting that he values Glen's companionship and isn't keeping him around out of pity.
At the Pallet Labs, Red struggles to parse chaotic, flashing memories from his merger with the wild unown at Lavender Tower. He senses a confusing pattern of constant, aimless observation coupled with immediate memory loss, unlike anything he experiences with his own tamed unown. Hoping to break through his research block, he visits Saffron Gym, watching Sabrina rapidly dispatch challengers using her exeggutor and alakazam. Meeting with her afterward, he asks to understand the different colors she perceives around psychic phenomena. She explains how visual wavelengths are translated into color maps by the human brain, confirming she sees distinct colors for telepathy (telo), kinesis (kino), and ghost energy (galo). Sabrina concludes that Ghosts constantly emit galo because they use both projection and kinesis simultaneously, creating a "purple" equivalent that psychics perceive. However, she cautions Red against definitively concluding that telepathy and kinesis are fundamentally separate phenomena, reminding him of the complexities of perception.
Meanwhile, Leaf visits Fuchsia City, setting up her teleportation point for the upcoming unconditioning conference. She secretly investigates the city's abnormally low crime rate and rumored ninja vigilantes by touring local bars under the guise of casual tourist interest. Ranger Captain Takara warns her that her growing fame makes her a target for organized crime, officially assigning Ranger Kyra as a chaperone to ensure her safety, with David stepping in to accompany Leaf when Kyra is busy.
Lessons — Split-and-commit. Duncan demonstrates "split-and-commit" by treating two contradictory possibilities (Koichi is sincere vs. Koichi is manipulative) as simultaneously true. Rather than relying on gut feelings to choose one, he commits to actions that account for both: allowing Koichi to teach, but under strict, easily revocable conditions.
