Red becomes addicted to battling and learning at the Vermilion Gym. During an Electric-type training class taught by Trainer Otto, Red learns the mechanics of electric attacks and how to utilize conductivity in battle. He meets Lizzy Takada, an energy-heiress researching voltage regulation. While testing his pichu, Red discovers he can sense his pokemon's instinctual anticipation of an attack's failure.
Later, in a battle against Aiko, Red attempts a dangerous experiment: projecting a state of "full permission" onto his charmander, suppressing its conditioning and letting its vicious battle instincts take over. This results in a ruthless counterattack that immediately triggers the pokemon's evolution into a charmeleon. He then observes Blue expertly outmaneuver Elaine's graveler using his rhyhorn, but is disturbed when Blue hides the fact that he used a toxic attack to win. Red chooses to be transparent about his own dangerous new psychic technique with Blue's group of friends rather than keeping it as a secret advantage. Observing this, Blue quietly notes to himself that Red has independently rediscovered a dark, combat-effective psychic technique: Sakki, or killing intent.
