Courage
Waiting out the rain at Aiko's ranch, the group tries to convince her overprotective father, Sho, to let her travel with them. Despite Red's proposal to turn the ranch into a pokemon therapy center and Blue's offer to let Aiko use an abra to teleport back nightly, Sho remains withdrawn and insists Aiko must stay. During chores, Red practices his psychic empathy, marveling at the alien sensory input of a bellsprout before being overwhelmed by his lingering grief. He later examines Aiko's prized, secretly-kept shiny eevee, discovering through his mental link that the pokemon is suffering from severely underdeveloped lungs. Horrified that her training caused it pain, Aiko resolves to seek medical help in Vermilion.
That evening, a courier delivers a package from Professor Oak: a new pokedex for Aiko, effectively recognizing her as a trainer. Overwhelmed by the validation, Aiko breaks down. The next morning, bolstered by Leaf's encouragement, Aiko confronts her father. When he still refuses to give his blessing, she tearfully embraces him and leaves to join the trio.
The group takes the underground subway system to Vermilion City. Upon arriving at the Trainer House, they are ambushed by news crews investigating their massive abra-capture operation. Coached by Leaf and Blue, Red delivers a prepared statement explaining their decision to sell the pokemon at a steep discount to gyms, hospitals, and Ranger outposts. When a reporter asks if his late father, Ranger Tomio Verres, influenced his decision, the resurfacing grief nearly breaks Red on camera. Refusing to suppress the emotion, Red struggles through the pain to articulate his desire to honor his father's memory by helping other Rangers get home safely, earning the crowd's applause.
