Interlude XXVI - Where the Heart Can Bloom

Following its escape from Cinnabar, the psychic hybrid—guided by its integrated mental partitions, the cautious "Survive" and the newly formed, optimistic "Thrive"—locates Dr. Fuji hiding in a secluded cabin far from Kanto's populated areas. The reunion is deeply emotional; the hybrid feels a profound sense of ease and safety in Fuji's presence, while Fuji is overwhelmed with relief and paternal affection, embracing his former captive as a son.

When Fuji asks what the hybrid has been doing, it shares psychic memories of its battles against powerful wild pokemon. Seeking to grow strong enough to challenge the Stormbringers and the incomprehensible unown god, the hybrid has been systematically testing its limits across the region. It shows Fuji memories of fighting a machamp to practice close combat without relying heavily on psychic powers, and discovering how to inflict localized offensive amnesia to disable a lucario's aura attacks. The hybrid also shares its attempts to master ki strikes, practicing brutal close-range blows against a rhyperior and experimenting with concentrated aura blasts on a wild tyranitar. While Fuji is immensely relieved the hybrid isn't fighting humans, he is terrified by its ultimate goals. He fears the hybrid will destroy itself trying to fight legendary threats or by seeking out Giovanni.

Fuji then shares what he has learned from the outside world. He warns the hybrid about the discovery of Miracle Eye, a technique that bypasses Dark-type psychic immunity. Rather than feeling threatened, the hybrid and its tulpas are exhilarated; they realize that if they can learn the technique, Giovanni will no longer be immune to their powers. Fuji also shows the hybrid the television broadcast where Sabrina publicly asks "the Dreamer" for help dealing with Rowan's madness. While the hybrid suspects the unown hive mind is responsible for Rowan's fragmentation, it decides to avoid Sabrina for now, fearing Giovanni might be using her as a trap.

Instead, the hybrid accepts Fuji's offer to stay at the cabin. For nearly two weeks, the hybrid experiences genuine peace for the first time in its life. With the cheerful Thrive driving their curiosity, they listen to music, learn to cook and make tea, use a specially designed keyboard to write poetry, and experience the simple comfort of sleeping in a real bed. The hybrid reads the novel Fuji and Leaf wrote about its life, feeling a cathartic mix of sorrow and validation. Thrive revels in the freedom, constantly encouraging the hybrid to take calculated risks to learn and grow, demonstrating a healthy balance to Survive's intense caution.

Eventually, the restless drive to learn pushes the hybrid to leave the safety of the cabin. Flying covertly over Saffron City to gather information from the sleeping minds below, the hybrid accidentally brushes against the mind of Red Verres. Fascinated by Red's unique mental partitions—which closely resemble its own tulpas—and knowing Red possesses Miracle Eye, the hybrid's tulpas eagerly push to merge with him to learn his secrets. Cautious of the risks of harming another psychic or being discovered, the hybrid restrains Thrive's enthusiasm, deciding to simply watch and wait for now, leaving its future open and full of bright possibilities.
