Sacrifice
Blue wakes on the morning of his final gym challenge from a nightmare about his past failures and battles. Plagued by anxiety and a crushing lack of news about Red, he mechanically prepares for the day and makes the short walk to Viridian Gym. Entering the massive arena, he meets Leader Giovanni, who is dressed in his signature three-piece suit. The two discuss Blue's changing priorities. Blue explains that while he once rushed to complete his gym circuit, the escalating regional disasters—the Stormbringers, the renegades, and the unown incident—have convinced him that society can no longer afford to be merely reactive. When Blue asks if Giovanni could have defeated his current team at his age, Giovanni answers no. Blue declares that his ultimate ambition is not just to become Champion, but to prove that it is possible to conquer overwhelming fear and inspire others to take the harder, more proactive path. Satisfied, Giovanni accepts Blue's challenge for Mastery: a brutal 4v4 double battle that will not stop for potential fatalities. Blue accepts the deadly terms, recognizing that risking his pokemon's lives is an instrumental necessity to secure the power he needs to protect the region.
At the Interpol hospital, Red finally wakes from his coma, his fractured mind desperately trying to hold its gossamer partitions together. Nurse Marin gently tests his cognitive function. Red realizes he cannot speak without triggering overwhelming mental static, so he uses a notepad to communicate. Dr. Zhang and Elite Agatha enter his room to examine him. Agatha holds Red as he sobs in relief and grief, mourning the fact that his actions ultimately led to Rowan's death. She reassures him that his intervention prevented far greater losses and confirms that Bill and his friends are safe. To his horror, Red learns he has been asleep for over a month and that his psychic powers are currently entirely absent. To ease his anxiety, Agatha allows them to turn on the television to watch Blue's ongoing badge challenge.
In the Viridian arena, Blue sends out his newest, highly-synergistic acquisitions: an incineroar and a rillaboom. They face Giovanni's massive hippowdon and garchomp. As Hippowdon whips up a sandstorm, Rillaboom rapidly spreads a grassy terrain to dampen Ground-type attacks. The battle instantly devolves into a frenetic, high-speed exchange of predictive substitutions. Giovanni expertly rotates a camerupt and a gastrodon to absorb Blue's attacks, while Blue rapidly cycles his blastoise, Maturin, and his newly purchased dragonite to maintain pressure.
The turning point comes when Giovanni's Garchomp commits to Outrage, relentlessly tearing into Maturin. Blue's battle calm fractures as he watches his starter endure devastating wounds, while his Rillaboom is simultaneously engulfed by Camerupt's Fire Blast. Caught in an agonizing moment of indecision, Blue remembers Arnaud's advice: to defeat Giovanni, he must unleash overwhelming power and accept the deadly risks. Committing fully to the brutal reality of the battle, Blue orders Maturin to use Bide and sends his Dragonite into its own Outrage against Gastrodon.
The arena becomes a bloodbath as both dragons rampage. Gastrodon stubbornly heals itself but is eventually torn apart by Dragonite's relentless assault. Maturin absorbs catastrophic damage from Garchomp before releasing her pent-up energy, blasting the massive dragon across the arena. With Garchomp neutralized, Blue quickly swaps Incineroar in. A coordinated Hydro Pump from Maturin takes out Camerupt, while Incineroar body-slams Hippowdon, tanking an Earth Power in return. When Blue cycles Dragonite back in to finish the fight, Giovanni simply smiles and withdraws his remaining pokemon, yielding the match.
The silence that follows is heavy. Blue numbly checks his pokeballs. Maturin has barely survived, but his Rillaboom is dead. Giovanni confirms his Gastrodon also perished, offering a cold lesson: asking the region to bleed for a cause requires possessing the strength to ensure those sacrifices are not meaningless. Blue accepts the Earth Badge and the bitter cost of his victory as the crowd roars its approval.
Back in the hospital, Red finishes watching the brutal match. Agatha notes that Red's inner self, heavily assisted by the Dreamer, is barely holding his mental partitions together. Dr. Zhang conducts a scan and detects alarming anomalies in Red's brain activity—scars left by Rowan's madness. When Agatha prompts Red to try speaking again, his mind violently goes sideways in a spasm of neurological disorientation. As Agatha eases him back onto the pillows, Red is left weeping in terror, realizing the profound, potentially permanent damage his psychic battle has wrought.
Lessons — The Ethics of Sacrifice (Instrumental Value). Giovanni teaches Blue that sacrificing lives is a tragic necessity for leaders, but that such sacrifice is rendered meaningless unless the leader possesses the power and resolve to actually achieve the overarching objective.
